'Da Vinci Code' rating gets mixed reactions from lawmakers

Two lawmakers have expressed mixed reactions on the "R" rating given by the Movie Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) to the controversial movie "The Da Vinci Code." Manila Rep. Beinvenido Abante, a pastor and born-again Christian leader, urged MTRCB Chair Maria Consoliza Laguardia to resign for failing to protect public morals. "The MTRCB chairman should resign. A good guardian of morals in society should have a conscience for the people," Abante said in text message sent to GMANews.TV. Abante is firm on his position not to allow the showing of the movie in public as it might confuse Catholic believers, especially the youth. He said his lawyers are still studying the possibility of filling temporary restraining order against the film's showing. Meanwhile, Muntinlupa Rep. Ruffy Biazon agrees with the 'R' rating, saying: "I don't mind it being shown. The book is already available to the public, so there is nothing in the movie that is not already in public domain. Other movies that had blasphemous content were shown recently, like the movie 'Silent Hill'." Biazon said people should realize that the movie, which was based on a novel of Dan Brown, was not a documentary film. But he said he respects the opinion of church officials and other groups who have been opposing the showing of the film. "They have the right and duty to campaign against it," Biazon said. In an interview at GMA7's radio DzBB, Laguardia said the film did not contain any direct attack against the Catholic Church and called on critics to respect the decision of the board. – GMANews.TV
