Pacquiao foe Mosley knocks out dogfighters in new PETA ad

Inside the boxing ring, Shane Mosley is a tough guy, knocking out opponents throughout his 18-year career that earned him a record of 46 wins (39 by knockout), six losses and one draw. However, the boxer known as "Sugar Shane" also has a soft spot in his heart, especially when it comes to dogs and the illegal bloodsport of dogfighting. He has even appeared in a new anti-dogfighting advertisement produced by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) Asia. Mosley will be challenging Manny Pacquiao on Saturday (Sunday in Manila) for the Filipino ring superstar’s World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight championship belt. Though Mosley is not the clear favorite in the 12-round title bout against Pacquiao, he will be gaining a lot of fans with the new campaign against dogfighting. "Dogfighting is dirty, it's cruel and it's a loser's game," said the former three-time world division champion in PETA’s new public service announcement. In the poster, the former World Boxing Association (WBA) welterweight champ is seen sitting in one corner of the ring with the words: "I choose to fight. Dogs don't. Dogfighting is for cowards. Don't do it." The new campaign also includes a 25-second TV ad where Mosley says, "My opponents and I know that when we step into the ring, we choose to be there and that if we don't come out on top, we can at least walk away. Dogfighting isn't like that." PETA said that dogfighting is a vicious blood sport that leaves animals mangled and maimed. Even though it is illegal in the Philippines, dogfighting continues to thrive and is kept hidden from public view. According to PETA, after dogs are forced to fight, they are usually left ripped apart, bloody, soaked in urine, unable to walk, and covered with cuts, bruises, and scars. The "losers" of these fights are often killed by their handlers. Mosley joins a growing list of athletes and other celebrities—including Tito Ortiz, Ron Artest, Michael Strahan, Mac Danzig and Carey Hart—who spoke out against animal abuse. – JVP, GMA News
