Underdog Boxing: Mosley should retire
After that lethargic performance against Manny Pacquiao, Shane Mosley should retire from the sport of boxing. I did not expect Mosley to win against Pacquiao but I thought he would at least give him a good fight. Mosley talked about his style being the perfect to counter Pacquiao’s. His head trainer, Naazim Richardson, harped about having the formula to defeat Pacquiao; too bad his fighter did not have the heart to execute. It’s okay to dismiss Mosley’s loss against Floyd Mayweather. He was simply in the ring with the better fighter. Mosley tried to make it a fight, even hurting Mayweather in the second round but he ran out of gas in the latter rounds. It’s also easy to dismiss his draw with Sergio Mora as a fluke. Mora was a big guy who went in overweight for that fight. Mosley does not have excuse for the way he fought Pacquiao. He was tentative in the first two rounds and after the knockdown he ditched boxing and changed his sport to running. It’s easy to please Filipino fight fans. Just give it your best and they will embrace you. They did that to Oscar Larios and David Diaz. Both did not have a snowball’s chance in hell against Pacquiao but both fought their hearts out. The same cannot be said of Mosley. As Richardson said, Mosley turned into a defensive fighter after getting knocked down. Jorge Arce, who stole the show in the undercard, had more fight in that little body of his compared to Mosley. In fact, If Pacquiao fought Arce instead of Mosley, I think it would have been a more enjoyable match, not because Arce would have been obliterated but because Arce would have tucked his chin down and start throwing bombs to try to knock out Pacquiao. After the knockdown, Mosley started thinking of life outside boxing. When he got up, he figured out that he did not want to be beaten up for a living anymore. It’s a pity that he didn’t figure that out before signing the contract for that fight. Molsey should have known that he was too old to face Pacquiao. He should have done boxing fans all over the world a favor and ditched the fight against the Pacman. The best way to end your career if you are a fighter is either to go down swinging or to quit when you feel that your competitive fire has already burned out; just make sure that when you quit, you do not do it in the middle of a fight. Pacquiao’s years in boxing are numbered. He is a smart fellow and he will retire when he feels that his skills are slipping. It’s a travesty that Pacquiao’s best years are being wasted on opponents who do not bring it. We’ve had to deal with that in two of his past three fights. Hopefully, Bob Arum pairs him up with someone who is out to win next time; someone like Juan Manuel Marquez. -- GMA News
