Floyd's dad puts money on Pacquiao vs Marquez

For a change, Floyd Mayweather Sr. is putting his money on Manny Pacquiao in the Filipino ring icon's November 12 meeting with old nemesis Juan Manuel Marquez. And age has a lot to do with it. "Man, Marquez is an old fighter," said the father of Floyd Mayweather Jr. "I like him as a fighter, but Marquez won't put up the same fight this time around against Pacquiao." The statement obviously comes as a surprise given the animosity existing between the Filipino boxing icon and the Mayweathers, whom Pacquiao sued in court over their allegations that the world's top pound-for-pound fighter is into performance enhancing drugs. But Floyd Sr. is just being practical. "He's 37-years-old and Marquez has a lot of wear and tear on him and it showed in his last couple of fights," the elder Mayweather said in an interview with FightHype.com. One of Marquez's bouts was a 12-round lopsided decision loss at the hands of Mayweather Jr. two years ago when the ageing Mexican went up in weight and fought as a welterweight. His third encounter with Pacquiao will also be fought at the welterweight limit, and no way Floyd Sr. sees Marquez having a chance against the Filipino eight-time world champion this time despite two competitive fights in the past that both ended up in controversy. The champion trainer even believes Pacquiao can even score a knockout win. "Pacquiao may stop him this time. They haven't fought in over three years and its clear which fighter is the more damaged since they last fought. He’s tailor made for Pacquiao right now," he said. The first Pacquiao-Marquez encounter in 2004 resulted in a controversial draw even though the Filipino southpaw bomber sent the Mexican down the canvas thrice in the opening round. In their rematch four years later, Pacquiao eked out a split decision in a hotly-contested fight that a few believed Marquez won. Floyd Sr. is among those who favored Marquez as the winner of that 2008 rematch. "If you want my honest opinion, I thought Marquez beat Pacquiao in the second fight," said Mayweather Sr. "A lot of people thought he (Marquez) won the first fight, but I could see that one being a draw because Pacquiao started off so hot. But that second fight... he won that fight man." No way would Marquez be able to duplicate the feat again, at least in the eyes of Floyd Sr. "You never know. He (Marquez) may still give him fits. But I just don’t see it. Not at 144 pounds." – JVP, GMA News
