Marquez thanks Pinoys for warm welcome before leaving PHL

Shortly before he left Manila for the United States, Mexican boxing legend Juan Manuel Marquez thanked Filipinos Monday for the warm welcome they gave him during his stay. A smiling Marquez waved to Filipinos at The Manila Hotel before boarding his vehicle for the Ninoy Aquino International Airport, radio dzBB's Carlo Mateo reported. The report added that Marquez expressed his thanks to the Filipino people for their hospitality during his stay in the Philippines. Marquez and his team boarded a five-vehicle convoy escorted by motorcycle-riding police personnel from the hotel to the airport. He is to head for the United States and then to Mexico for the next phase of the world promotion of his bout with Filipino boxing icon and Sarangani Rep. Emmanuel "Manny" Pacquiao on November 12 [Nov. 13 Manila time].

The Mexican boxing champ arrived in the Philippines last week to a warm welcome. He and Pacquiao promoted their upcoming fight in Manila last Saturday. On Sunday, Marquez attended a special Mass at the Manila Cathedral for him and Pacquiao, although Pacquiao did not show up for the Mass. But a separate report by dzBB's Sam Nielsen said tension gripped Marquez's team after Marquez left a bag at the hotel. A team member fetched the item in time for Marquez's flight for the US. The report said Marquez was to take a Delta Flight 172 for Narita (Japan), then take a connecting flight to the US. — RSJ, GMA News
