No mas: De La Hoya opposed to planned Pacquiao-Marquez IV

There's a growing clamor for a possible fourth meeting between Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez in the wake of the hotly-contested result of their third match last Sunday (Manila time). For Oscar De La Hoya, the former multi-division world champion and Golden Boy Promotions president, there's no use for the two great fighters of contrasting styles to settle their differences inside the ring again. Boxing's 'Golden Boy' believes there's no way for Pacquiao and Marquez to top their gutsy performance the last time, one which saw the Filipino sensation escaped with a majority decision to retain his World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight title. "A fourth fight? I don't think so. What for?," said De La Hoya on his thoughts on the November 12 bout despite the highly-contentious result that was greeted with a chorus of boos by the sell-out crowd at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. Top Rank chairman Bob Arum immediately floated the likelihood of a fourth Pacquiao-Marquez bout in an attempt to determine and find what he referred to as "definitive winner once and for all."

While Pacquiao, 32, said he's willing to do it again, Marquez has set his own terms for another rematch, which he wants to be held in Mexico under his own conditions. But as one of boxing's foremost promoters today, De La Hoya thinks fight fans have had enough already of a Pacquiao-Marquez match. "I think everybody already know what's going to happen and what will happen. What for?," said the 38-year-old Olympic gold medalist at the Wild Card gym Tuesday afternoon when he attended the media day workout of Amir Khan, who's gearing up for his coming fight against Lamont Peterson for the World Boxing Association (WBA) and International Boxing Federation (IBF) junior welterweight titles. Like Pacquiao, Khan is also under the guidance of World Boxing Hall of Famer Freddie Roach, but is being promoted by De La Hoya. "There's nothing better than Marquez can do, and there's really nothing better than Pacquiao can do. We'll gonna see the same fight," added the former boxing star from East Los Angeles. De La Hoya both have past connections with Pacquiao and Marquez. He lost to the Filipino southpaw behind a brutal ninth-round stoppage in their non-welterweight showdown in 2008, while he was Marquez's one-time promoter. De La Hoya, a former top pound-for-pound fighter of the world, a title which now belongs to Pacquiao, watched the fight which he personally had it 7-5 for Marquez. "Or maybe a draw, maybe a couple of rounds were close, we're even," he said. "It's no secret that Marquez has Pacquiao’s numbers. He knows what to do when Pacquiao makes mistakes. Marquez is a counter-puncher. Marquez is a fighter who waits for you, and he'll wait for you all night." Styles make fights, and De La Hoya said it is obvious that Pacquiao and Marquez's styles are made for each other. "A fighter like Manny, he wants to fight, he wants to please people, he wants to please himself. So he'll gonna go in and makes mistakes. And that's what Marquez capitalized," De La Hoya added. De La Hoya believes that with fight fans failing to see a dominant Pacquiao in the 12-round bout added to the crowd's disappointment. "I think people were in shock, obviously because they were so used to seeing Manny Pacquiao dominate everybody in recent times. And the fact that he has a close fight, so people are saying 'oh my gosh.'" "So it's understandable, there are people who'll gonna cry foul, and there are people who'll gonna say, 'No. Manny won.' That's the beauty of having the style like Marquez and the style like Pacquiao, they always get a good fight," ended De La Hoya. — JVP, GMA News
