MANILA, Philippines – The police on Wednesday said that the suspected robbers, who torched a posh residence in Quezon City Tuesday morning leaving five people dead, were able to cart away P3.4 million worth of cash and personal items.
A radio report quoted Senior Police Officer (SPO) 2 Jerry Abad, chief investigator from the Quezon City Police District (QCPD), as saying that the six suspected criminals emptied the family’s cash vault and took away P150,000.
Also, the group apparently stole P1 million worth of jewelry, P1.5 million worth of appliances, and several pieces of paintings pegged to be worth P750,000, the police official said.
The crime was discovered Tuesday noon when police and firefighters received reports that a blaze erupted in a two-story residence owned by a Filipino-Chinese family, along Talayan Street in Talayan village. It took fire marshals almost two hours to douse the fire, which reached the third alarm.
Four residents, including a three-year-old girl, died on the spot while the girl’s 70-year-old grandmother, identified as Felicita Jiao, died while being treated at the hospital.
Investigators however were surprised to find out that all four bodies bore stab wounds, leading authorities to suspect early on that the incident was a case of a robbery.
Abad said that the suspected robbers used two Mitsubishi L300 vans and one tricycle as get-away vehicles. While declining to divulge the vehicles’ plate numbers, Abad said they have already checked their owners with the Land Transportation Franchising Regulatory Board.
The QCPD Criminal Inevstigation Division and Detection Unit has already formed two teams to conduct follow up operations and probe the robbery incident.
Investigation showed that four of the assailants barged into the house and ordered Felicita to open the cash vault. The remaining two suspects acted as lookouts.
The Jiao family has reportedly hired their own private security to ensure the safety of the lone survivor in the attack, Felicita’s 86-year-old husband, Dr Geronimo Jiao, who is still recuperating in an undisclosed Quezon City hospital.
The surviving elderly had said he could positively identify one of the six suspects since he knew and used to talk to him before. - GMANews.TV
