CAGAYAN DE ORO City, Philippines - The business community in the Philippines’ second-largest island will formulate a Mindanao Business Policy Agenda that will focus on strengthening public-private sector partnership.

In a statement, an official of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Mindanao said that the local business community will “give more attention to forging better partnership between the public and the private sectors to improve Mindanao’s economy."

During the launch of the 17th Mindanao Business Conference (MinBizCon) in Cagayan de Oro City, Elena Haw, Mindanao’s area vice-president of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said that the conference will feature the theme, ‘One.Global.Filipino: Making Public-Private Partnerships Work for Mindanao’s Economic Development.’

The conference intends to bring various sectors representing the Mindanao Business Community.

Haw also said businessmen in Mindanao have discussed the rice crisis during pre-conference consultations and that have agreed to include recommendations for government action.

“The issue of food security has become an area of concern for us, so much that we have allotted more time in tackling agribusiness development in the conference," Haw, who also sits as this year’s conference chair, said.

The MinBizCon, to be held on August 27-29 at the Zamboanga del Norte Convention Center in Dipolog City, is the biggest annual gathering of the business community of Mindanao and is the official Area Business Conference of the PCCI in the island.

A highlight of the conference is the plenary session for strengthening public-private sector role in support to agribusiness development to be discussed by San Miguel Foods Corporation President Francisco Alejo III, committee on Food and Agriculture vice-chair Congressman Rosendo Labadlabad, and Agriculture secretary Arthur C. Yap.

It is expected from this plenary session that recommended actions will be drafted by the attendees to address the issue of food security and rice crisis in Mindanao.

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo will receive the Mindanao Business Policy Agenda and issue government response through her keynote address at the closing ceremony.

This 17th MinBizCon will be hosted by the Dipolog Chamber of Commerce and Industry in partnership with the provincial government of Zamboanga del Norte and the city governments of Dipolog and Dapitan.

It is likewise being supported by the Growth with Equity in Mindanao (GEM3) program, the Mindanao Economic Development Council (MEDCO) and the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO).

At least 500 chamber leaders, businessmen, trade and industry associations, academe, foreign dignitaries, and government officials are expected to attend the conference. The conference also features trade exhibits and business matching sessions. - GMANews.TV
