Kalinga to build power plant
TABUK CITY, Kalinga, Philippines - The Kalinga Provincial Board (PB) has authorized Governor Floydelia Diasen to enter into an agreement with the Development Bank of the Philippine (DBP) to place the Kalinga mini-hydro power plant project under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM). The PB said the agreement would be doubly beneficial as it promotes economic development through investments and emphasizes the need to protect the environment as a key consideration to sustain development. In a previous resolution dated April 29, the PB allowed the Provincial Government to enter into loan agreement with the DBP to borrow P36,900,000 for the construction of a mini-hydro, which will supply electricity to government-owned facilities and a number of households within the capital town. The project is seen as a way of conserving and cutting the cost of the increasing prices of power rates and will minimize the rotating brownouts, which disrupt government and business operations in the province due to the preventive maintenance being undertaken by the National Power Corporation. - Sun.Star Baguio
