MANILA, Philippines - The Chinese government formally handed out on Wednesday its $100,000 (roughly P4.5-million) financial assistance for the victims of typhoon "Frank (Fengshen)," the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said. Acting DFA Secretary Francisco Benedicto received the aid from Chinese Ambassador Song Tao at a simple ceremony at the DFA office in Manila. "In such times of difficulties, the Chinese people and the Philippine people always stand firmly behind each other and extend helping hands to each other. Because we are not only neighbors and friends, we are also brothers and relatives," said Ambassador Song in the DFA statement. Upon learning the tragedy, Chinese president Hu Jintao immediately sent a message of condolence to President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. China’s aid would be used for the disaster relief and reconstruction of the worst-hit areas of typhoon Frank, the Chinese Embassy said.
