Typhoon casualties reach 600

MANILA, Philippines - The death toll from typhoon Frank (international code name: Fensheng) rose to more than 600, according to the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC).
Glenn J. Rabonza, Office of Civil Defense administrator and NDCC executive officer said that as of 6 p.m. Wednesday, a total of 608 people were reported dead, 792 were injured and 36 were still missing.
The casualties excluded retrieved bodies from the M/V Princess of the Stars that sank on June 21 off Romblon province.
Mr. Rabonza said that the estimated cost of damage to agriculture and infrastructure has reached P10.7 billion.
Infrastructure damages amounted to P3.22 billion, with the breakdown as follows: roads and bridges, P2.3 billion; schoolbuildings and classrooms, P543.1 million; electrical facilities, 29.4 million; and other government facilities, P352.9 million.
Damages to agriculture totaled P7.5 billion, with rice at P983.2 million; corn, P434.5 million; high-value crops, P475.8 million; livestock, P78.10 million; irrigation, P1.2 billion; and other agricultural facilities, P20.1 million. The fisheries sector was hardest hit at P4.3 billion.
The total cost of assistance provided by government and nongovernmental agencies have reached P70 million, Mr. Rabonza said.
Frank totally destroyed 84,706 houses and partially damaged 254,744 others, displacing 813,374 families or 4.1 million individuals.
Areas declared under state of calamity are the provinces of Albay, Antique, Iloilo, Aklan, Capiz, Sarangani, Sultan Kudarat, North Cotabato, Marinduque and Romblon.
Mr. Rabonza said the emergency relief needs of residents in those areas are still food, clothing and construction materials for transition shelters. - BusinessWorld
