Scapulars no fashion accessory - bishop
MANILA, Philippines - Scapulars, the brown length of cloth worn to show affiliation with a religious order, are not fashion accessories and should be worn with reverence. On this note, Davao archbishop Fernando Capalla reminded the faithful to give reverence to the scapular, which he said is a sign of "total consecration of one's life to God and to the Mother of God." "Total consecration implies that one's thoughts, desires, actions and relationships are motivated, enlightened, and guided by one's love for God and the Blessed Mother," he said in a statement posted on the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines website. Capalla said there is doubt that this scapular wearer knows the real meaning of this sacramental, particularly that of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. "I get the impression that the only reason they keep wearing it is to be free from danger and to be assured of heaven the Saturday after their death," he said. In his column "Shepherd's Corner" in Davao Catholic Herald, Capalla pointed out that the promised heaven can only be granted if the conditions asked by Our Lady of Mt. Carmel are fulfilled. "The prayers and other practices are easy to do but the way of life is quite demanding. And this is where many of us are found wanting," he added. The brown scapular, like all other scapulars, is a miniature habit or little dress. It is a reminder of the Carmelite monk's and nun's attire.
