Bishop hints at nationwide communion ban for ‘pro-abortionists’

MANILA, Philippines - A communion ban imposed by Ozamiz Archbishop Jesus Dosado on lawmakers pushing "pro-abortion" measures in Congress may become nationwide if bishops deem it necessary. Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Oscar Cruz said Monday the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) may declare such a ban if the matter becomes "serious" enough for it. "Pagdating sa CBCP ... Mula ngayon lahat na kilalang pro-abortionists di bibigyan ng communion, ang simbahan sa buong Pilipinas ay di pwedeng bigyan ng communion ang taong yan. Pag punta niya sa ibang lugar bahala siya sa buhay niya (Once it reaches the CBCP and the CBCP deems the situation serious enough, it can declare that all pro-abortionists be denied communion. All churches in the Philippines are to deny them communion. They may have to try their luck abroad to get communion)," Cruz said in an interview on Church-run Radio Veritas. But he said the matter has not been brought to the CBCP for consideration, at least for now. He also said it is unlikely the Church will come out with a definite list of politicians who the Church considers to be "pro-abortion." "Di pa po naman dumating sa ganitong level (It has not yet reached that level, at least for now)," he said. For now, Cruz said the communion ban applies only to Dosado's turf. On Sunday, Dosado issued a pastoral letter where he banned communion to lawmakers pushing "pro-abortion" measures in Congress. Cruz said the issue of abortion is not a joke among Catholic bishops, noting it can be done through contraceptives that contain abortifacients. "Malaking kasalanan din yan kung di siya paparusahan (It is the priest's duty to act against public sinners. If a priest or bishop does not punish a public sinner, it is the priest or bishop who will err)," he said. - GMANews.TV
