Alex Pagulayan files P6-M libel case vs 2 pool officials

MANILA, Philippines - Former World Pool champ Alex Pagulayan filed a libel complaint on Monday against billiards officials Yen Makabenta and Ernesto Fajardo and asked for more than P6 million in damages. The Filipino-Canadian cue artist went to the Pasig Regional Trial Court to file his complaint before Second Assistant City Prosecutor Maria Anunciacion Hipol. With him was his lawyer, Alexis Abastillas-Suarez of Malaya Sanchez Anover and Anover law firm. Fellow cue masters Efren "Bata" Reyes, Francisco "Django" Bustamante, Roberto Gomez, and Joven Bustamante, along with Bugsy Promotions owner Perry Mariano, were also with Pagulayan to lend morale support. Pagulayan filed a case against the respondents a year after the Billiards and Snookers Congress of the Philippines (BSCP) officials accused him of "sharking," an act of distracting one's opponent to win, at the Singapore leg Guinness 9-Ball Tour. In his sworn statement, the 30-year-old Pagulayan said he was also called "disgraceful loser" and a "liar." The P6 million that Pagulayan is asking from the respondents includes P3 million that he lost because he could not do an endorsement for Andok's Lechon when the BSCP prevented him from joining the next leg of the Guinness 9-Ball Tour and another P3 million for morale damages. He's also seeking P500,000 in exemplary damages and P350,000 in attorney’s and other legal fees. Pagulayan is asking for a maximum imprisonment of six years for both Makabenta and Fajardo. Makabenta and Fajardo’s camp were tight-lipped on the issue. "We have not received the copy of the complaints yet and our lawyers advised us not say anything for the meantime," Fajardo said in a phone interview. - GMANews.TV
