Manila suspends afternoon college classes

MANILA, Philippines - The city government of Manila on Wednesday ordered the suspension of classes in public and private colleges and universities due to floods brought by storm Helen, QTV's Live on Q reported. The television report quoted city administrator Jesus Marzan as saying that classes were canceled around 3 in the afternoon. The report said that although heavy rains have stopped, the flood waters in some areas in Manila, particularly in Blumentritt and Piy Margal in Sampaloc, remain high. The reports said residents have complained that flooding in the area became frequent when adjacent roads were elevated. Earlier in the day, Manila, also through Marzan, was the first to announce the cancellation of afternoon classes in the city's elementary and secondary schools due to the floods. "Kanselado ang klase sa elementary at high school simula 12 noon (Elementary and high school classes in the elementary and high school are suspended starting noon)," Marzan had said over dzBB radio. He said this order covers both private and public schools in the city. The cities of Caloocan, Malabon, Navotas, Taguig and Las Pinas have also suspended classes in their respective areas due to floods. - Amita Legaspi, GMANews.TV
