Pinay bound for Dubai dies aboard HK flight

MANILA, Philippines — A Filipino woman died while aboard a flight from Hong Kong to Dubai last June, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said in a belated report.

In a statement posted on its website Saturday morning (www.dfa.gov.ph), the DFA identified the woman as Nurfaida Juklani Burung.

"(Burung) was seriously taken ill due to profuse bleeding on board a Cathay Pacific flight from Hongkong en route to Dubai on the night of 22 June 2008," the statement said.

It said the plane made an emergency landing at the Zia International Airport in Dhaka, Bangladesh in the early morning of June 23, but Burung died before she could be given treatment.

The DFA said that on June 26, the Philippine Embassy coordinated with Dragonair Dhaka in facilitating the repatriation of Burung's remains to the Philippines.

It said the embassy coordinated with the Office of Vice Governor Ruby Sahali of Tawi-Tawi for the repatriation of Burung's remains to her native province.

Philippine Ambassador Zenaida Rabago expressed appreciation for the assistance rendered to the embassy by Bangladeshi officials, Dragonair, and logistics provider Homebound.

The report did not say whether Burung was a contract worker or not. The United Arab Emirates is among the major destinations of Filipinos seeking work abroad. GMANews.TV
