MANILA, Philippines - An official in the Philippines says the government and a large Muslim guerrilla group have agreed to sign a crucial accord on an expanded Muslim homeland Sunday after settling remaining kinks in Malaysian-brokered talks.
Presidential peace process adviser Hermogenes Esperon says government negotiator Rodolfo Garcia signed an agreement with his Moro Islamic Liberation Front counterpart, Mohagher Iqbal, late Sunday in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The signing came after both ironed out differences and agreed to set the signing early next month of a key accord on ancestral domain.
Both sides settled the issue earlier this month by agreeing to expand an existing Muslim autonomous region in the south to include 712 villages, subject to the agreement of residents in a plebiscite. - AP
