Mobile phone firms slash text messaging fees by half

MANILA, Philippines - Domestic mobile phone companies have slashed their texting fees by half to P0.50 from P1 until October.

This was announced by Smart Communications, Globe Telecom Inc, and Sun Cellular on the same day President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo
announced the rate reduction in her State of the Nation Address on Monday.

“The rate cut takes effect Monday (July 28). We approved it for implementation for three months. It is up to them if they will ask for an extension of the promo," said Edgardo Cabarios, National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) director, in an interview.

For their part, the carriers said they will monitor the impact of cheaper rates before they decide to extend the offer or not. - GMANews.TV
