Makati City to use biodiesel for police cars

MANILA, Philippines - Less than a month after electric jeepneys (e-jeep) started plying their routes in Makati City, the city's police force on Monday launched the “PNP biofuel" - a mix of diesel and used cooking oil. In a phone interview with GMANews.TV, Makati police chief Senior Supt. Gilbert Cruz said the PNP biofuel will ensure the continued patrolling of police cars throughout the city despite soaring oil prices Cruz noted that this fuel will be composed of 40 percent used vegetable oil from restaurants and 60 percent diesel. He said the Makati police has set up a small plant wherein specialists from Mapua Institute of Technology, among others, will be processing the oil and mix it to the diesel fuel. A report over radio dzXL further quoted Cruz as saying several restaurants in the city, particularly fast food chains, have already pledged to donate used cooking oil. Cruz said one full tank of a police mobile car, which can carry up to 60 liters, costs P3,459 at P57.65 per liter. But with their newly-launched biodiesel, he said they can save P968.52 because the price for a full tank has been lowered to P2,490.48. He added that the Makati City police, which has 10 mobile cars, can save up to half a million a month with the use of biofuel. Last July 1, electric jeepneys manufactured by the Motor Vehicle Parts Manufacturers Association of the Philippines (MVPMAP) started plying around Makati as part of the city’s green initiative. - Johanna Camille Sisante, GMANews.TV
