Dengue outbreak declared in San Mateo, Rizal subdivision

MANILA, Philippines - A dengue outbreak was declared in Tierra Monte Subdivision in Barangay Silangan, San Mateo Rizal, after health officials had recorded at least 25 cases and six deaths in the area since January. Dr. Anna Sochaco, municipal health officer, told GMA News that dengue cases might continue to increase as the rainy season has yet to end. In response to the outbreak, local authorities have stepped up their anti-dengue campaign. Municipal health officials particularly noted a high risk of dengue spreading in Tierra Monte subdivision in Silangan village. The health officials said an initial check of the subdivision showed the lack of water service in the area prompted many residents to collect water and store it in containers. Residents have no constant water service in the subdivision because of its high elevation. But health authorities noted the water containers were not properly covered, and may allow dengue-carrying mosquitoes to breed there. They said they have intensified their door-to-door campaign, fumigation and collection of water samples from the area. - GMANews.TV
