Mayon spews ash; Phivolcs reminds residents of danger zone

MANILA, Philippines - After almost a year of silence, Mayon Volcano in Bicol again showed signs of activity by spewing ash into the air, a radio report said Sunday afternoon. Bombo Radyo Legazpi cited a report by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology that Mayon spewed ash at about 9:12 a.m. It said an initial report by Phivolcs showed the ash went up as high as 200 meters, in an east-northeast direction. The report said the activity lasted at least one minute. Clouds have since obstructed volcanologists from getting a good view of the volcano's activity. Phivolcs reiterated that Mayon Volcano remains under Alert level 1, meaning no one could enter its seven-kilometer extended danger zone. It also warned areas near the volcano against minor explosions and possible rock falls from its upper slopes. - GMANews.TV
