7 dead, 4,196 displaced in typhoon ‘Karen’ - NDCC


MANILA, Philippines - The death toll in typhoon “Karen” that lashed Northern Luzon and the National Capital Region (NCR) Wednesday has climbed to seven, according to the latest report from the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC). In its 6 p.m. report, the NDCC said six of the dead were from Cordillera Autonomous Region (CAR) while the seventh was from La Union province. The NDCC identified the six fatalities from CAR as Petra Kadatar, 72, of Baguio City; Mark Anthony Somera, 1, Lester Somera, 3, Alvin Somera, 10, and Arnold Attiw, 37, all from Benguet; and Camille Rasalan, 12, of Abra. In Ilocos, the lone fatality so far was identified as Hilario Badunan, 77, of Porporiket village in Sudipen town in La Union. The report said most of the fatalities were killed due to landslides. Injured also because of a landslide was 21-year-old Leslie Carpiso. Still missing was Dionisio Tumamao, 50, of San Nicolas town in Ilocos Norte, who was carried away while crossing the Padsan River. The NDCC said at least 1,344 families or 4,196 people in 46 villages of Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, and La Union were affected by floods. Some 145 houses were underwater in Sarrat in Ilocos Norte, while 30 families in Sta. Cruz, Ilocos Sur were evacuated. In Cagayan Valley, Simpatuyo Bridge, Tawi Overflow Bridge, Capatan-Pinacanauan Bridge in Tugegarao City, and Abusag Bridge in Baggao town in Cagayan were not passable. The typhoon also caused an estimated P40 million in damages in the said province, according to its agricultural office. The Cagayan Electric Cooperative (Cagelco) temporarily shut down power supply affecting the entire province, the NDCC said. At least 50 families from low lying areas in the cities of Aparri, Tuguegarao and Ilagan have already been transferred to evacuation centers where they will be safely housed. - with Floro Taguinod, GMANews.TV
