Torre appointed skipper of RP chess Olympians


MANILA, Philippines – The National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) appointed Eugene Torre as non-playing team captain of the five-man national squad which will compete in the World Chess Olympiad on November 12 to 25 in Dresden, Germany. NCFP president Prospero Pichay said that Torre's experience in the Olympiad “will be valuable" to the team. Torre, Asia's first grandmaster, played as the Philippines' top board player for an unprecedented 17 times. He recently won the PGMA Cup international chess championship. The NCFP has also designated GM Bong Villamayor on Board One, while whiz kid Wesley So will man Board Two. The other members of the team are GMs Jayson Gonzales and Darwin Laylo, and International Master John Paul Gomez. – GMANews.TV
