DOH: Egg sandwich likely cause of food poisoning in Tondo

MANILA, Philippines – The Health department said Tuesday said that egg sandwich could be the likely cause of the illnesses which downed 112 pupils in Manila's Tondo district last week. A GMA News report quoted DOH National Epidemiology Center head Eric Tayag as saying that the sandwiches consumed by students from Corazon de Jesus Elementary School could have been contaminated with the salmonella bacteria usually found in eggs. The report added that a huge number of children confined at the Jose Reyes Medical Center have already been discharged. Earlier reports said the children’s fecal test results showed that the victims suffered from gastroenteritis and amoebiasis, probably caused by using non-potable drinking water and unhygienic preparation of food. The DOH is set to release its findings on food samples from the Jose Corazon de Jesus school canteen Tuesday afternoon, Tayag said. - Sophia Dedace, GMANews.TV
