'Nina' toll: 8 dead, 19 injured, 15 missing


MANILA, Philippines - The death toll of typhoon "Nina" (Hagupit) rose to eight as of Tuesday, the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) said. In its report issued 5 p.m., the NDCC said the eight included three from Cordillera, two each from Ilocos and Western Visayas, and one from Eastern Visayas. The agency identified three who died in a Baguio City landslide as Lolita Baroma, 76, Julian Baroma and Leilani Fetcha. All three were residents of Baguio City. A fourth victim, 27-year-old Rodolfo Villanueva of La Union died when he was hit by lightning. The four other fatalities died in separate drowning incidents. They were identified as Cansio Culapit, 40, of Ilocos Sur, Elmer Balensia, 12, of Antique, Clarita Viaje, 61, also of Antique and Rodrigo Duena, 29, of Catbalogan City. At least 19 were injured, all from Cordillera, while 15 remain missing, including 14 from Cordillera and one from Western Visayas. The missing included miners Gilbert Nattem, Garry Ganu, Rudy Boling Jr., Joel Bulga, Jeyson Himmayod, Rudy Himmayod, Jojo Himmayod, Juan Himmayod, Marvin Himmayod, Vincent Himmayod, Joseph Anayasan, Mario Annayasan, Gerry Monyboda, and Robert Buway. Some 2,186 families or 10,352 persons were affected in 47 villages in 14 towns in Ilocos, Cagayan Valley, Southern Luzon, Region 10, and Cordillera, the NDCC said. Of the affected, 59 families or 293 persons stayed in three evacuation centers. Three fishermen reported missing since Sunday were all found alive in La Union and Ilocos Norte. - GMANews.TV
