FEU men 3-peat in UAAP chess; DLSU stops UST women’s reign


MANILA, Philippines – Far Eastern University won recently its third straight UAAP men’s chess championship. The Tamaraws defeated the Adamson Falcons 3-1 and finished the tournament with 36 points to win the title. University of Santo Tomas was second with 33.5 points and Adamson (33) was third. John Paul Gomez, the veteran International Master, won an astonishing fifth MVP, while Sheider Nebato of FEU was named Rookie of the Year. In the women’s division, De La Salle defeated erstwhile champion UST 3.5-0.5 to take the title. The Lady Archers were tied with the FEU Lady Tamaraws with 35 points but La Salle won via superior tiebreak. UST finished third with 28 points. Alices Salvador won the MVP, while Jedara Docena of FEU was awarded the Rookie of the Year trophy. In the juniors division, Adamson’s 36.5 points helped the Baby Falcons win the championship. UE (33.5) and Ateneo (32.5) placed second and third, respectively. Gabriel Layugan of Ateneo was honored MVP, while teammate Dominique Lagula was named Rookie of the Year. – GMANews.TV
