BFAR Region 2 to develop more fish cage projects


TUGUEGARAO CITY, Philippines – The regional office of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) has embarked on a program to develop the construction, technology and use of fish cages for the development of the marginalized sector. Max Prudencio, BFAR information officer, said the Fish Cage Demonstration has been launched in different towns in Cagayan Valley with assistance from local government units. Prudencio said the cages will have a dimension of 5x10 meters and 2.5 meters deep and is capable of housing 3,125 fingerlings. The cage can produce 560 kilograms of Tilapia in about four months time. “We provide the fingerlings, assistance, materials and the technology while the LGUs will take care of the feeds,all are given free to the beneficiaries," said Prudencio, adding that the awardees main task is to market the produce. The agency also renewed its commitment to continue all its programs scheduled for the current year. - Floro Taguinod, GMANews.TV
