Diver shows symptoms of 'cyanide poisoning'

MANILA, Philippines - A foreign diver of a firm hired to salvage the capsized MV Princess of the Stars was hospitalized after showing symptoms of cyanide poisoning, a radio report said Friday. Radio dzBB's Carlo Mateo reported that the diver, who was not immediately identified, was rushed to a hospital in Romblon and was to be airlifted to Metro Manila Friday morning. The Philippine Coast Guard's Special Medical Assistance Reaction Unit said it is now investigating the incident, particularly on how the cyanide poisoning occurred. Salvage work on the MV Princess of the Stars started only recently, with crews prioritizing the extraction of endosulfan, a toxic substance, from the ship. After the endosulfan is extracted, the salvage crews will focus on other chemicals before retrieving the remains of other passengers trapped in the vessel. - GMANews.TV
