Silent types like Pacquiao 'scarier', de la Hoya says

MANILA, Philippines – Oscar de la Hoya may have heard all the brashest, foulest, most intolerable trash talk from an assortment of the loudest, most decorated opponents in his 15 years in professional boxing. But the Golden Boy is still convinced that Manny Pacquiao’s sort – the kind who doesn’t say much – may be the most dangerous type of foe. In his online column, Pacquiao marveled at the massive promotional tour for his December 6 meeting with de la Hoya which began last week at the Statue of Liberty in New York City. The majestic scenery, as were the spectacular backdrops of iconic landmarks that would host the cross-country promo in the six-US city marketing campaign, served as the only visual treats during the media conferences from the East to the West coasts. No verbal tussles. No commotions. No stare-downs. Just a lot of good vibe, winsome smiles and respect being shown typical of Pacquiao and de la Hoya, considered two of the most mild-mannered fighters in the violent sport’s history. “Unlike most of the press conferences we’ve seen or been at, we basically went through a trouble-free promotional tour for our fight," Pacquiao said. “We both respect one another and our skills as boxers. And even though you don’t see how intense and excited we both are outside the ring, it doesn’t mean that’s going to be the case inside the ring. De la Hoya said it best when he described me, ‘It's the silent ones you should be more scared of.’" The media blitz that began at The Big Apple and shifted to Chicago then Houston and San Antonio in Texas and San Antonio and Los Angeles is part of a buildup for the Pacquiao-de la Hoya bout being forecasted as the most watched professional-boxing event in history. In New York, Pacquiao said he didn’t expect to have more fans come up to him than de la Hoya. In Chicago, Pacquiao joined de la Hoya in opening the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. At the Sears Tower, Pacquiao was left in awe of the popular skyscraper. “It took us nearly one whole minute to get to the top of the building where we held the media conference," he said. In Texas, Pacquiao and de la Hoya met the press at the NASA Parkway in Houston and The Alamo and in San Antonio. The promotional tour ends on Tuesday at the Whittier Boulevard Arch in Los Angeles. – GMANews.TV
