Maureen Hultman case: Govt frees son of ex-chief justice

MANILA, Philippines - After 13 years, convicted killer Claudio Teehankee Jr. was released from the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa City last week, Justice secretary Raul Gonzalez said Monday. Radio dzBB's Teresa Tavares reported that Gonzalez defended the move, saying it went through the proper procedures and that the Board of Pardon and Parole reviewed the case thoroughly. Gonzalez said Teehankee, son of the late former Chief Justice Claudio Teehankee Sr., was released after President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo approved the commutation of his sentence. The Supreme Court convicted Teehankee in 1995 for the murder of Roland John Chapman and Maureen Hultman. The killing of Hultman, Chapman and Eldon Maguan in 1991 fueled calls for the re-imposition of the death penalty. In March 2006, Teehankee was rushed to a hospital after a fellow inmate stabbed him in the maximum security compound of the New Bilibid Prison. - GMANews.TV
