MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine National Police has added nine armored fighting vehicles to boost its tactical capability in anti-criminality and anti-insurgency operations.
An article on the PNP website said PNP chief Dir. Gen. Jesus Verzosa turned over the nine refurbished V-150 vehicles to the Special Action Force (SAF) in Bicutan, Taguig City.
"These fighting vehicles, in a large measure, will give a big boost to our anti-criminality and internal security operations especially in situations where the SAF is called-in to provide tactical support," Verzosa said.
He cited the recent tactical offensive of SAF in Compostela Valley where it overran two main camps of the New People's Army (NPA).
But he said the mission would have been completed much earlier had there been light armor support to back the ground troops.
"With these new equipment and the awesome firepower, maneuverability and armor protection it provides to our fighting men in the field, the PNP is now in a better and more advantageous position to perform the role and responsibility in internal security operations as contained in Executive Order 546," Verzosa said.
Made in the US by Cadillac Gage, the V-150 fighting vehicles have been in service in the country's police and military forces since the 1980s.
Recently, the PNP refurbished some unserviceable units in its fleet under the V-150 Rehabilitation Program of the PNP Logistics Support Service (LSS).
LSS Director Chief Supt. Teodorico Lapuz IV said 13 V-150 units have been refurbished, restored and re-fitted to its original condition and technical specifications.
He said they are currently in service with the SAF, Regional Mobile Groups, and other PNP Operational Support Units.
The LSS has also refurbished other types of tactical and support vehicles in the PNP fleet such as the M35 6x6 trucks, Hummer multi-purpose vehicles, and troop carriers, Lapuz said. - GMANews.TV
