GAMU, Isabela – The Philippine Army has reported overrunning another communist camp in a remote village in Abra province, raising to eight the number of rebel lairs captured in three northern Luzon regions.
The camp, believed to be one of the major staging areas of rebel operations was overrun by government forces in the mountainous barangay Tubtuba of Tubo town in Abra.
In a belated report Thursday, Maj. Gen. Melchor Dilodilo, chief of the 5th Infantry Division (ID) based in Gamu, Isabela, said government troops on patrol mission chanced upon at least 20 heavily armed communist guerillas and an encounter later led to the discovery of the camp.
The ensuing firefight resulted in the recovery of an M16 Armalite rifle and some subversive documents, said the Army.
Dilodilo said, “There were no casualties on our side but we believe the rebels sustained serious gunshot wounds from its ranks as evidenced by the fresh bloods seen along their escape routes."
In his report, Col. Loreto Magundayao of the 50th Infantry Battalion (IB) said that after engaging the first group of rebels, the soldiers also came across about ten more communist guerillas manning the camp.
The captured camp consists of a cluster of huts, a conference hall and a training ground, said Magundayao’s report. GMANews.TV
