MANILA, Philippines – As the scandal over melamine-tainted milk products continued to be discussed, two canned goods which is said to have come from China tested positive for cadmium, a television report said Friday night.
In his report aired over GMA news 24 Oras on Friday, Jun Veneracion said the two canned products marked "Made in China" that the GMA News bought tested positive for traces of cadmium - a heavy metal compound that could cause cancer.
Veneracion said that due to controversies and issues of health risk on products originating from China, the news team bought two pieces of canned goods and brought it to an independent laboratory center for examination of possible chemical or metal content.
According to the report, the Qualibet Testing Services Inc. tested for traces of lead and cadmium in the canned goods. After the examination, both products were found negative for lead content but positive for cadmium.
The cadmium content was beyond the allowable limits.
“Dun lang po maaari ‘yan (cadmium) sa lata yung pinaka-packaging… ‘di ba lata ang process n’ya pini-plate sya, so yung cadmium manggagaling sa metal plating," said Hope Lazcano, QTSI Senior Analyst.
The report said the allowable limit of cadmium in meat and process meat is just 0.05 ppm. But the canned goods that GMA News bought in the market had 0.40 ppm and other one has 1.30 ppm.
“Mababa kasi ang concentration e. Hindi talaga nailalabas nang mabilisan ng katawan natin. So ang mangyayari madadagdag lang ng madadag sya (cadmium), tataas ng tataas, mag-a-accumulate sa katawan natin," Lazcano added.
Because of the heath scare, products from China are now being sold at much cheaper price, according to the report. - Fidel Jimenez, GMANews.TV
