Domado Sultan proclaimed Lanao Sur town mayor after recount

MARAWI CITY, Philippines - The three-man new Municipal Board of Canvassers proclaimed in absentia Saturday night Domado Disomimba Sultan as the winning candidate for mayor of Buadiposo Buntong, Lanao del Sur, after a recount of the votes for the position in the May 2007 elections.

Sultan obtained 4,078 votes after the recounting of votes and re-canvassing of election returns from 51-clustered precincts of the municipality, according to the board of canvassers headed by lawyer Renault C. Macarambon, regional election director of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.

Buadiposo Buntong town has 33 barangays and 9,477 registered voters.

The other members of the board of canvassers include lawyers Stalin Baguio as vice chairman and Roy Prule Edeca as member-secretary.

In an interview with media, Macarambon said that the recount was done in compliance with a writ of execution issued by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) en banc in SPC No. 07-002 and EM No. 07-059, entitled Domado Disomimba Sultan versus EO Mamangcoday Colangcag, et al.

Macarambon added that the recount held at the Provincial Capitol Compound under tight security proceeded smoothly, making it possible for the early proclamation of the winner. He said only votes and election returns for the office of mayor were recounted and re-canvassed, respectively.

Soldiers from 103 Brigade under Col. Rey Ardo and police officers under provincial director Senior Supt. Panares Adap provided the security at the capitol.

After the Comelec proclamation, Sultan took his oath of office before City Prosecutor Elias R. Yusoph Al Hadj and immediately assumed office.

As his first official act, Sultan conferred with community leaders and locally based government officials. He spelled out his program of government and sought the support of the various sectors of the local community. The mayor also thanked the people for their support of his candidacy.

Engineer Butch Baunto, a close relative of the new mayor, said that Sultan would focus on peace and order, agriculture, education, health and sanitation and public works, among others.

Baunto said the assumption of Sultan was delayed due to some fraudulent acts of political opponents. He said they made it appear that Sultan withdrew from the political race through a falsified withdrawal note.

He said this prompted Sultan’s family members to ask the Comelec for a recount. - GMANews.TV
