Women’s cage league roster of teams balloons to 11… maybe 12?

MANILA, Philippines – A total of 59 payers were chosen in the inaugural Women’s Philippine Basketball League player draft Wednesday at the Penthouse of the Philippine Stock Exchange building in Ortigas Center, Pasig. Oracle Residences chose National University center Carmina Laguindanum first in the draft, a pick expected to bolster the team’s frontcourt. Smart Sports, which owned the second pick, got former Far Eastern University player Marsha Faustino. The team owned by communications mogul Manny V. Pangilinan grabbed 11 cagers, the most in the draft. Bacchus Energy Drink was the only team that did not join the drafting after it opted to stick to varsity partner Saint Scholastica’s College. All teams are partnerships between corporate sponsors and women’s college teams. Ever Bilena, officially the league defending champion having won in the tournament’s last season in 1998, acquired the one-two punch of Santo Tomas University – collegiate MVP marichu Bacarro and Rem Buensacosa. 11 now, 1 more to go? Meanwhile, the roster of teams has ballooned to 11 with the entry of Mail N More which has reportedly began negotiating with Chiang Kai Shek College in a bid to forge an alliance with the Chinese school. The RP women’s youth team also confirmed its participation, with Extreme Magic Sing backing up the juniors’ club. Chino Trinidad said the addition of a 12th team looks possible. “We’re willing to accept them, the more the merrier," the WPBL commissioner said. – GMANews.TV
