Former Olympic Committee member Ram Ruhee dies

LAUSANNE, Switzerland – The International Olympic Committee says Ram Ruhee, a former IOC member and FIFA executive, has died. Ruhee, of Mauritius, was elected IOC member from 1988 to 2007, when he became an honorary member, the IOC said. He died at the age of 81. Ruhee was the founder and secretary-general of the Mauritius National Olympic Committee since 1971. He "played a key role in promoting the values of sport to the youth in his country," the IOC said in a statement about the former teacher. Ruhee founded his country's First Division football club Cadets Club in 1948 to subsequently chair and manage it. In 1999, Ruhee was investigated for an alleged corruption scandal involving dozens of IOC members involved in evaluating Salt Lake City's bid for the 2002 Winter Games. He was later exonerated of any wrongdoing. – AP
