Lightning kills nun in Misamis

MANILA, Philippines — A nun was killed after being struck by lightning at a beach in Misamis Oriental province last Monday, the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines said on Wednesday. The CBCP, in an article on its website (www.cbcpnews.com), said lightning hit Sr. Elnora Butaslog while she was standing along the shore at Bubantugan Beach in Jasaan town Monday. The incident shocked and saddened the community of Missionary Sisters of Our Lady of Triumph of the Cross (MSOLTC), the CBCP said. Sister Ma. Violota Navarro, founder and mother superior of Missionary Sisters of Our Lady of Triumph of the Cross, said the victim and Sister Maricho Hermosa went swimming at the beach in Bubantogan when lightning struck. Hermosa said that after one thunderclap, Sister Maricho saw Butaslog fall to the ground. "It was pouring rain and there was an extreme amount of lightning in the area at that time when Sister Nora was hit," Navarro said. In 1988, Butaslog entered the MSOLTC congregation and was assigned at the Immaculate Conception Cathedral Parish in Ozamiz City. She received her perpetual vow in 1993, then was transferred to the Holy Cross Parish of Panaon, and to St. Joseph Parish in Sincaban, Misamis Occidental. Butaslog was last assigned at Bubantogan, Jasaan, Misamis Oriental for the Mission Vocation. Her remains will be transferred to the family's residence at Logait, Misamis Oriental for a one-night vigil. On Thursday, her remains will be brought to the MSOLTC Mother's house Chapel, Pingol, Ozamiz City. She will be buried Nov. 1. - GMANews.TV
