'Coup rumor' sets out Mass for peace at Malacañang

MANILA, Philippines - A text message prompted a group supporting President Arroyo to organize a midnight mass in Malacañang Friday to ward off "destabilization."

Radio dzBB reported early Saturday that President Arroyo and her supporters from the "Mahal Ko Bayan Ko" movement attended the mass presided by Lucena bishop Emilio Marquez.

Evelyn Kilayko, head of the group, claimed receiving a text message about a "destabilization" plot from the political left.

The destabilization rumor came just a few days before sessions resume in Congress, where processes to advance new impeachment bid against Mrs Arroyo are expected to begin.

Former Speaker Jose De Venecia Jr. endorsed earlier this week while he was in the US.

Present at the midnight mass were Arroyo's friends and classmates, who prayed for "peace" during the mass.

Earlier this year, Kilayko's group placed full-page newspaper ads calling for "truth not rage" at the height of the $329.48-million ZTE broadband deal mess.

De Venecia's son Jose III was one of the whistleblowers in the issue, linking members of the first family to the mess.

Kilayko was also tagged as the one behind a series of pro-Arroyo ads at the height of Arroyo's impeachment in 2005.

At the time, the pro-Arroyo ads claimed "We prefer GMA to chaos," and were signed by "600 top women in civil society." - GMANews.TV
