MANILA, Philippines — A substandard helmet proved nearly fatal for a motorcycle rider who was seriously injured after figuring in a predawn accident along Epifanio delos Santos Avenue (EDSA) on Saturday.
Radio dzBB's Roland Bola reported that the victim, identified as Ronald Apalay, 27, was rushed to the Ospital ng Makati after sustaining head injuries.
"Nakainom kaya madilim at mabilis magmaneho. Basag ang noo hanggang bibig kaya ‘di siya makausap (He seemed drunk and it was dark. He had wounds in the forehead and mouth so we cannot talk to him)," said a Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) aide.
Initial investigation showed Apalay's motorcycle (3908-MJ) went off the road and hit the center island of EDSA near the Magallanes Flyover in Makati City.
A separate report on Q-11 television's Balitanghali newscast said Agalay was thrown off his motorcycle because of the impact. - GMANews.TV
