Newborn kidnapped in Iloilo hospital

MANILA, Philippines - A woman posing as a nurse abducted a newborn baby girl at a rural hospital in Iloilo province last weekend, an online news site reported. An article on The News Today said that the incident, which occurred Friday morning, was believed to be an off-shoot of a feud between two families. Police said they are looking into the possibility that the abduction was related to a quarrel between the family of the mother and the father of the baby. Investigators have invited the father, 23-year-old John Edcel Portillo, for questioning. They have yet to talk to the mother, Rose Ann Anino, 19, because she was still recuperating. Rosalina Anino, the baby's grandmother, was cradling Jurosh Portillo inside the OB ward of the Aleosan District Hospital in Alimodian town when the woman approached her and asked for the baby. The woman, who wore a surgical mask, told Anino she would bathe the baby, who was born less than three hours earlier Rose Ann. But the family was alarmed when the nurse failed to return with the baby after more than two hours. When the family inquired with hospital staff, they learned the woman who took the baby was not a hospital nurse. "Our investigation is focused at that angle. What we are now trying to determine is which family is behind the kidnapping of the baby," case investigator PO2 Sandy Jarder of the Alimodian police station said. "We are tracing the history of the relationship," he added. Investigation showed the newborn’s parents met through text, had a relationship and the mother, Anino, got pregnant of Portillo. During pregnancy, proposals for the marriage of the two were made, but the girl's parents seemed cold. The parents of the girl would not approve of the marriage of their eldest daughter, Jarder said. - GMANews.TV
