6 MILF rebs killed as troops foil attack on detachment

MANILA, Philippines - Six Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) rebels were killed Tuesday when they tried to attack a military detachment in the southern Philippine province of North Cotabato. Lieutenant Colonel Julieto Ando, spokesman of the Army’s 6th Infantry Division, said an undetermined number of rebels swooped down on the Rangaban detachment in Aleosan town at about 12.20 a.m. Ando said the rebels belonged to the MILF’s 105th Base Command and was led by one Maestro Lanson. “The troops were prepared for the attack, resulting in rebel casualties,” said Ando, referring to the troops of the 40th Infantry Battalion who were manning the detachment. Ando however admitted that the fatality figure was not based on body count but on intelligence information. Major Randolph Cabangbang, spokesman of the military’s Eastern Mindanao Command, said the rebels fired at least three mortar rounds on the detachment. No casualties were reported on the government side, Cabangbang said. - GMANews.TV
