DOH to Quezon residents: Boil drinking water

MANILA, Philippines - Health authorities on Tuesday advised residents of two towns in Quezon province to boil their drinking water to prevent the further spread of suspected typhoid fever. In an interview on dzBB radio, National Epidemiology Center head Eric Tayag said they are now preparing a team to get to the affected areas to ascertain the cause of the disease that had downed several residents. "If they get their drinking water from a deep well, they should boil it first," Tayag said in Filipino. He said they are now poring over the records of those taken ill to make sure the disease is typhoid fever. Tayag also said they are not discounting the possibility of the water being contaminated after a landslide in 2004 damaged the province's water system. "Sa ngayon ang aming director sa Region 4-A kasama sa team na pupunta ngayon. Magdadala sila ng kakailanganing gamot at supplies para tulungan ang tinamaan ng outbreak (Right now our personnel from Region 4-A will lead a team to the affected sites. They will bring medicines and supplies to help those affected by the outbreak)," Tayag said. Citing reports reaching him, he said those affected included children and adults. Residents from Real and Infanta towns in Quezon province were taken ill due to a still undetermined illness, although the victims displayed symptoms of typhoid fever. Earlier, Tayag said they have collected drinking water samples to determine the cause of their illness. - GMANews.TV
