Vice mayor files raps vs widow of slain radioman

GINGOOG CITY, Philippines - Gingoog City Vice Mayor Marlon C. Kho on Tuesday said he filed oral defamation charges against the widow of slain radioman Arecio Padrigao Sr after she allegedly shouted in public that Kho was responsible for the killing of her husband Monday. Kho said he filed the case against Teresita Padrigao, 41, at the Gingoog City Regional Trial Court through his lawyer. A check with the RTC office here revealed that the case was forwarded to the City Prosecutors’ Office. “She shouted and even cursed me on the phone when I called her (to express) condolence on Monday after I learned that Arecio was killed," Kho said. Kho told GMAnews.TV in an interview that he had taken precautionary measures because he was being linked to the murder of Padrigao whom he described as one of his media friends. He also said that he was confused by talk linking him to the murder. “I had to be extra careful now because my friends and family were suspecting something’s fishy is going on here and maybe somebody was giving the Padrigao family wrong and maligned information to pin me down," Kho said. Kho claimed that days before the killing of Padrigao, the late broadcaster approached him and collected from him P1,000 as payment for the City Vice Mayor’s monthly sponsorship for Padrigao’s radio program. “So how can I be the one suspected of killing her husband when I am one of the sponsors of his radio program? Besides, me and Padrigao have never quarreled," added Kho. Kho added that he had to file the case not to add more problems to the widow but to let the truth come out and to protect his reputation allegedly besmirched due to the accusations. “At first, when some of my close friends and relatives told me that Mrs. Teresita Padrigao repeatedly shouted hysterically my name in public as the one who killed her husband, I did not believe it until I was the one who heard it," Kho said. Padrigao was a radio "blocktimer" who had a weekly radio program that is aired live every Saturday morning. Earlier DXRS FM Radyo Natin Station Franchisee Gualberto Pahunang told GMAnews.TV Padrigao had confided that he received death threats through text messages claiming that Kho was out to kill him. GMAnews.TV went back to the Padrigao’s home in Purok 2, Barangay 19-A Tuesday afternoon and tried to reach Mrs. Padrigao to get her comment, but her children said their mother went to some relatives’ houses to ask for help. In an earlier interview Tuesday morning at their residence, Mrs. Padrigao did not mention the name of Kho in relation to the killing. Padrigao, 52, was shot dead by one of two motorcycle-riding men in front of the Bukidnon State University on Motomul St. about 7 a.m. on Monday. With Padrigao at the time of the incident was his seven-year old daughter Arce, a grade one pupil of Gingoog City Central Elementary School. - Alvin Guanzon, GMANews.TV
