Cargo ship sinks off Corregidor; 17 rescued

MANILA, Philippines - Seventeen crewmen, including two Filipinos, were rescued from a sinking Korean cargo ship in Manila Bay, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said on Saturday. Coast Guard commandant Vice Admiral Wilfredo Tamayo said the M/V S-1 Sky sank past 3 a.m. off Corregidor Island. Before the ship went down, its crew sent a distress signal and was picked up by a passing Singaporean vessel, which immediately responded together with Coast Guard rescuers, said Tamayo. He said the ship had a severe leak which the crew failed to plug. Tamayo said that the 17 crewmen, including seven Koreans and eight Burmese (Myanmar) nationals, were taken to the Manila International Container Port. - Kimberly Jane T. Tan, GMANews.TV
