Groups mark Bonifacio Day with anti-Chacha rallies

MANILA, Philippines - Militant groups on Sunday marked Bonifacio Day with demonstrations in the different parts of the Metropolis to protest moves to amend the Constitution. Among those who staged rallies were the Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan), Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU), and party-list Anakpawis. Members of the said groups marched towards Mendiola in Manila, and vowed to use the same nationalist aspirations of national hero Andres Bonifacio in thwarting purported efforts to have President Arroyo to stay in power and surrender national patrimony to foreign interests thru Charter change (Cha-cha). “We oppose moves to amend the Constitution, as it is likely lead to the removal of term limits for elected officials including the president and lift restrictions to foreign ownership of land and other businesses, which is tantamount to a gross sell-out of the Filipino people,” said Renato Reyes Jr, secretary general of Bayan. “Proposing 100 percent foreign ownership of land is like begging foreigners to re-colonize us. Bonifacio would be turning in his grave if he were to witness this gross national betrayal,” he added. Reyes said a nationwide campaign against Charter change (Chacha) is in the offing. “It is only a question of when the next major protest action will be held,” he said. The militant leader also warned that more intense protest actions might take place if Arroyo administration allies would further insist on pushing for Chacha. - GMANews.TV
