NDCC: 16 die, thousands displaced in RP floods


MANILA, Philippines - Sixteen people died, thousands were displaced while several others remain missing as floods hit Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Southern Mindanao and Cordillera Administrative Region, the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) said Thursday. In its report, NDCC said seven of the fatalities were from Cagayan province, while four were from Isabela, three from Aurora and two are from Camarines Norte. In Camarines Sur, six remained missing and three have been injured. Three others are reported missing in Isabela. This, after an intertropical convergence zone triggered heavy downpour in Visayas and Mindanao while the northeast monsoon affected the seaboards of Luzon. NDCC spokesman Anthony Golez said a total of 87,350 families or 412,209 people have been affected by the calamity and are being served by concerned officials. Of the number 5,805 families or 28,076 people were forced to seek shelter in evacuation centers. NDCC also said 125 houses have been totally destroyed in the floods while 9,614 sustained damaged. Initial estimated cost of damage to agriculture and infrastructure amounted to P433.77 million, it added. - GMANews.TV
