House suspends four-day workweek for December

MANILA, Philippines - The House of Representatives is suspending its four-day workweek for December to work on pending legislation before session adjourns on December 20 for the holiday season. The suspension was contained in a memo from House Secretary-General Marilyn Barua Yap dated November 10, 2008. "In the interest and exigency of the service, the implementation of the compressed workweek is hereby suspended for the month of December 2008. Consequently, all House officials and employees are required to report for work eight hours a day from Monday to Friday and to observe their normal work schedule prior to the effectivity of the compressed workweek," the memo read. The compressed workweek will take effect again once session resumes after the break on January 19, 2009. House Speaker Prospero Nograles had earlier said he wants the House to finish before the Christmas break the deliberations on 102 bills of national importance, including controversial measures such as the Reproductive Health bill and the extension of the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program (CARP). "We will have to act on these measures but we want to find a middle ground so that the measures are acceptable to everyone," he said in a statement. - Johanna Camille Sisante, GMANews.TV
