Solar-powered lantern lighted at the Senate

MANILA, Philippines - A locally-made, solar-powered lantern was lighted at the Philippine Senate Thursday morning by an advocacy group calling for "energy revolution."

“Energy revolution," according to Greenpeace Climate and Energy Campaigner Amalie Obusan, means “a transformation of the global economy into one that is low carbon and sustainable in its production and consumption."

Clad in red shirts, the Greenpeace volunteers and other supporters of renewable energy trooped to the Senate for the activity and were received by Senator Miguel Zubiri, main author of the renewable energy bill.

Interviewed by GMANews.TV, Obusan said the six-foot-high, rattan-made lantern was lit up to remind senators “that renewable energy is the clear solution to our problems with climate change and not nuclear or fossil fuels which is more catastrophic."

“The main focus of this activity is to highlight how energy efficiency could work in the country and how renewable energy can be its backbone in the Philippines," Obusan said.

The activity was also in line with expected passage of the Renewable Energy Act next week, she added.

Aside from the Manila-made giant lantern, the group also distributed miniature lanterns to senators. Obusan said all the lanterns were custom-made.

“The big one is decorated with LED (light-emitting Diodes) lights. It has of course it has solar panels. The solar panel is what captures the energy and store it to the batteries. Once stored the inverter would be able to produce power by converting the stored energy to electricity," she said.

The small lanterns, meanwhile, were made in Albay in the Bicol region.

“There is something significant about this because Albay is a climate hotspot. They are one of the worst hit," Obusan said, adding that since the lantern is solar-powered, it does not emit carbon dioxide and thus environment friendly.

The lantern will be displayed in the Senate for the whole Yuletide season. - GMANews.TV
