PNP expects 'zero crime' on day of Pacquiao fight

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine National Police on Friday assured the populace that it will continue normal peace and order and internal security operations in the country on Sunday, even if authorities anticipate "zero crime" because of the much-awaited Pacquiao-Dela Hoya fight in Las Vegas, Nevada. The assurance came in a press statement issued by Camp Crame's public information office. In it, the PNP said that although the crime rate drops whenever Pacquiao fights, it will not lower its guard on Sunday. "The PNP joins the entire Filipino nation in cheering and praying for the victory of our people's champion Manny Pacquiao. But we in the PNP cannot afford to lower our guard on that day because we have a job to do and a mandate to perform," PNP spokesman Chief Supt Nicanor A Bartolome said. According to Bartolome, crime incidents dipped significantly during previous fights of Manny Pacquiao, and some areas including Metro Manila have even recorded zero crime. Police authorities attribute this phenomenon to the fact that everybody is glued to their television screens to watch Pacquiao. Perhaps even the criminal elements are also busy watching the fight, that they suspend their criminal activities, Bartolome said. "But we will not rest our vigilance on this anticipation because some criminal elements just might take advantage of the situation," the PNP Spokesman said. - PR/GMANews.TV
