World champ boxer Donaire arrives in RP, joins Pacquiao celebration


MANILA , Philippines – Reigning world flyweight champion Nonito Donaire Jr. arrived Monday noon at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 2. In an interview on dzBB, Donaire said he returned to the country to join world lightweight champion Manny Pacquiao celebrate his 30th birthday on December 17. Donaire added that he will stay in the country to prepare for an upcoming match in March. He will train under Gerry Peñalosa, the reigning world bantamweight champion. "God willing na lalaban ako ng March, so most likely dito ako hanggang for three months.  Actually this week mag-umpisa ako ng training (If God wills it, I will have a match this March. So most likely, I will be here in the Philippines for the next three months. I will begin my training this week," Donaire said. Donaire is one four current Filipino world champions. Besides Pacquiao and Peñalosa, Donnie Nietes holds the world minimumweight championship. Donaire defeated Moruti Mthalane with a sixth-round technical knockout in an International Boxing Federation title defense last month in Las Vegas. Under Peñalosa, Donaire will have a new trainer after he and his father Nonito Sr. parted ways. Donaire, the Athlete of the Year last year, is reportedly taking on world super-flyweight champion Fernando Montiel for his next assignment. - Sophia Dedace, GMANews.TV
